CONGRATULATIONS TO TMMI’s ADVISORY BOARD MEMBER GARRETT BROWN.
We are elated to announce that Garrett Brown, a TMM, INC. (TMMI) Advisory Board member, has been inducted into the 2013 U.S. Department of Commerce’s United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) National Inventors Hall of Fame.
The National Inventors Hall of Fame committee recognized Garrett Brown’s Steadicam camera stabilizer invention as being one of the great technological advancements that has helped make human, social and economic progress possible.
Introduced in the mid 70’s, Garrett Brown’s Steadicam stabilizer invention revolutionized the Video and Film industry. His invention literally affected the way we see the world in films and videos – the Steadicam allowed directors to obtain shots that were previously thought impossible. Check out the video below to see the original Steadicam creation in action.
The Steadicam is a body-mounted stabilization device so camera operators can move freely while filming remains smooth.
Garrett Brown was also a recipient of an Oscar for Scientific or Technical Achievement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and an Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for his invention of the Steadicam.
Garrett’s bio can be read on our TMM, INC. (TMMI) official press release in announcing him as an advisory board member or you can check out Garrett Brown’s homepage.
A great article on Garrett Brown can also be read on NBCNEWS.com .
Congratulations and Thank You
Without the invention of the Steadicam, some of the great movies we all known and loved might not have been as mind-blowing or dramatic or tear-jerking as we know it to be. If movie making is an art, would movies like Kill Bill or Goodfellas still have the same pizzazz if they were not filmed with the help of the Steadicam ? We certainly do not think so.
Recognize these movies in the video below? They were all filmed with the help of the Steadicam. Do you think that some of these movies’ emotional appeal would have been lost if they were replaced with “Non-Steadicamed” assisted shots?
From its use by blockbuster film production companies to Indie filmmakers to Youtube type videographers, the Steadicam has definitely played a major role in shaping the current “video-centric” world we live in today.
Once again, we congratulate you Garrett on being inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame and thank you for aiding in shaping the Film and Video industry to what it is today.
